Surya P. Subedi, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Cambodia

The office of Chairwoman Hautala met on 17 November with Prof. Surya P. Subedi, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Cambodia to discuss the current human rights situation in Cambodia and how the European parliament could support in their protection and promotion. Of most pressing human rights concerns at the moment in Cambodia are lack of freedom of expression, association and assembly, corruption and land eviction.[:] Great concern was especially expressed over the safety of the human rights defenders and community activists opposing the forced evictions who are attacked regularly with pervasive impunity. Next opportunity for dialogue with the authorities of Cambodia will be the sixth session (30.11.-11.12.2009) of the UN Human Rights Councils’ Universal Periodic Review where the human rights record of Cambodia will be scrutinized.
